Shear Waves and Converted Waves

A compressional wave (p-wave) propagating through the earth not only reflects as a p-wave and but also as an upward-traveling shear wave (s-wave or converted wave). Shear waves have unique properties that can aid in:

  • Fracture characterization (orientation and density)
  • Lithology identification and rock properties (e.g. Vp/Vs and Poisson’s ratio)
  • Pore-fluid identification
  • Imaging through gas-saturated sediments
  • Imaging shallow sediments with higher resolution than P-P wave

Converted Wave Processing
